Blue Lacy. The court does consider his record as an outstanding citizen.” Thornburg then sentenced Pace to just over 11 years in federal prison,

David Frank Pace, 58, a former West Henderson High carpentry and technical teacher, was arrested July 7, 2008, in Asheville by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office after he chatted online with the officers. He was charged with soliciting a child by using a computer and was indicted in October 2008. He pleaded guilty in January. Pace’s attorney, Max Cogburn, argued that U.S. District Court Judge Lacy Thornburg should consider the facts of the case against his client before sentencing.

“When the court looks at the facts of the case, it sees a 35-year-old detective (Pace was chatting with),” Cogburn said. “It is impossible for a minor to be influenced when there was not a minor involved.” Cogburn also told the court that similar state charges against Pace in Greenville, S.C., and Guilford County would be dismissed after Thursday’s sentencing.

Johnny Dangerously. Logansport man’s life to be celebrated

He only conceded to the tribute after Ben Freeman approached him months ago. Freeman, of San Antonio, was in the stands when Harvey was hurt. He saw Harvey occasionally through the years when he’d visit Logansport.

A chance encounter with Harvey in a Logansport restaurant over a year ago sparked the idea. “It was like it was in my mind and heart, and it wouldn’t go away. I heard it clear as I’m talking to you: You’ve got to do something for Kenneth.

Reliable Calling. Starkville to host TVA meeting

The Tennessee Valley Authority plans a public meeting in Starkville to help establish its goals for the next 20 years — goals that are likely to include more nuclear power generation and more energy conservation by consumers. Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, chairman of the TVA congressional caucus, offered a vision of the future for the TVA on Friday that includes nuclear replacing coal as TVA’s major source of electric generation over the next 20 years, calling atomic power TVA’s best option for “pollution-free, carbon-free,” reliable generation. The Senate’s third-ranking Republican, in a speech to a Tennessee municipal distributors group in Memphis, also said TVA, the nation’s largest public utility, should do more to encourage energy conservation. Tennessee has the highest per capita use of electricity in the country.

Alexander offered his suggestions as the federal power agency begins a series of public hearings next week to develop a new Integrated Resource Plan to chart the agency’s goals for the next two decades. The last plan was done in 1995. A draft for the new one is due next spring and a final version by early 2011. TVA provides electricity to about 9 million consumers through 158 distributors in Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

Brett Wallace. Cardinals again turn attention to A’s Holliday

The teams had talked before the Cardinals acquired Mark DeRosa. Word surfaced Thursday that talks between the Cardinals and A’s had resumed. However, Holliday is in the final year of his contract, and Derek Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Cardinals are balking at swapping an elite prospect for a rental player.

Wallace was a first-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2008 draft. He is a third baseman playing for at Triple-A Memphis. Cards manager Tony La Russa is said to be a big Holliday fan and would use him in left field. He sees Holliday, an All-Star outfielder, as a cleanup man who can prevent teams from pitching around Pujols, who is baseball’s most dangerous hitter.

Hell Kitchen Fight. Immigration Now, Immigration Tomorrow, Immigration Forever: Reason’s guide to reality

To be fair, the president’s confusion is ours as a country: This nation of immigrants has never been particularly comfortable with new arrivals. How will immigration play out politically over the next few months, especially since the dead heat that American politics has become is more dead than ever? The vast majority of the American people is staunchly in favor of militarizing the Southern border or doing whatever it may take to stop the flow of illegal immigrants from that part of the world. In fact, a plurality of the American people is in favor of reducing the flow of legal immigrants, too. At least for a while. So are the House Republicans, who passed legislation that is long on enforcement and “cutting off the flow” stuff and extremely short on amnesty, guest workers, and the like.

A good chunk of Senate Republicans-along with a handful of Democrats-is in favor of less-draconian legislation than House Republicans, including a guest-worker program and, in theory at least, some way of legalizing many, if not most, current illegals. At press time, the Senate had signed on to building some sort of wall. Where any of this might end up is anybody’s guess.

Metastatic Melanoma. The writer was suffering from meningitis and was also fighting melanoma.

London (ANI): Irish-American author Frank McCourt, best known for his moving memoir ‘Angela’s Ashes,’ died of cancer in a New York hospice on Sunday afternoon. The writer was suffering from meningitis and was also fighting melanoma. Susan Moldow of McCourt’s publisher Scribner said the cause of his death was metastatic melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, the BBC reports.

The 78-year-old writer had won Pulitzer Prize for his work ‘Angela’s Ashes’, which he also marked as “epic of woe”. The book dwelt into his childhood in abject poverty in the slums of the Irish city of Limerick after he relocated to Ireland from New York during the Great Depression with his parents at an early age. However, before the book’s 1996 publication, McCourt worked as a New York high school teacher for 30 years.

Grant Fuhr. Fuhr’s two eagles included a 60-foot putt on the 536-yard, par-5 fourth hole to go with two birdies and offset a pair of bogeys for a tourney-.

STATELINE, Nev. – NHL Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr had two eagles and seven-time champion Rick Rhoden birdied five of the last seven holes Saturday to tie for the second-round lead at the 20th annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe. Both shot a 5-under-par 67 for a two-day total of 56 points in the modified Stableford scoring system. The format awards six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, zero for bogey and minus-two for double bogey or worse.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, the first-round leader with 27 points, shot even par Saturday to get to 49 points in a tie for third with former hockey player Dan Quinn – a four-time winner of the tourney with a $125,000 first-place check. Fuhr’s two eagles included a 60-foot putt on the 536-yard, par-5 fourth hole to go with two birdies and offset a pair of bogeys for a tourney-record 32 points for the day at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course on the shores of the lake atop the Sierra. “A bit of a roller coaster,” said Fuhr, a goalie with six different NHL teams who won five Stanley Cup Championships with the Edmonton Oilers from 1981-1991. “I missed six or seven 4-footers but kind of made up for it with a Hail Mary that kind of fell in the cup,” he said.
